New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Have To Be An Exercise In Frustration

We’ve all heard the crack about how gyms (and their upscale siblings, “Fitness Centers”) make a fortune because of people who – with the best of intentions – sign up, but then give up. Most of us have fallen into the trap of setting sky-high New Year’s resolutions, only to find they’re too much to bear/impossible to fulfill. But New Years’ resolutions don’t have to be an exercise in frustration.

I believe the key is to think small. This may sound strange, since we’re so used to being told we should always “Aim High!”. But consider: If you accomplish something small, you not only reap the benefits of that accomplishment, you gain a feeling of satisfaction. And that satisfaction can become the springboard towards the next small goal.

Think of it like a staircase: To get from one story of a building to another, you don’t suddenly develop wings and fly. (Elevators don’t count in this analogy.) You ascend step by step. If the staircase is really high, you might not even be able to see the story above you. But it’s there. And each step up the staircase brings you closer to it.

This is how I approach my health & lifestyle coaching, by helping you find ways to improve your life, increment by increment. I have a unique advantage in doing this, thanks in part to the 20 years I spent as a journalist, specializing in personality profiles: I know how to ask questions that help reveal subtle connections and patterns. I can use those skills, along with the knowledge I’ve amassed over the years, to help you Live Healthier Happily – Without Feeling Deprived.
